NASA Iowa Space Grant Internship

August 2020 - May 2021

A part of NASA’s National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program since 1990, NASA ISGC continually strives to improve and inspire Iowa’s future in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The ISGC supports aerospace research, education, and outreach activities for all Iowans through five program categories: internships, fellowships, scholarships; higher education; research infrastructure; precollege; and informal education.

As an intern at NASA Iowa Space Grant Consortium my responsibilities include:

Write news copy highlighting things such as research, faculty and student accomplishments, opportunities for students and educators, alumni accomplishments and more for digital and print
Assist with website updates, using WordPress
Design graphics for digital and print use
Contribute to social media accounts
Shoot, edit and post video
Take photos of people and events
Edit photos, using Adobe Photoshop
Create and edit page layouts, using Adobe InDesign
Gather survey data

Instagram Account

I had the idea to create an Instagram for ISGC because we already had LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook so it seemed like a natural step to start up on Instagram. Before I made the account, I created a document listing all of the ideas I had for posts and stories I would design on a weekly basis for the Instagram account and shared it with my bosses. Some of my ideas for posts and stories included: student highlight as a weekly post, meet the team, this day in history, polls and important deadlines.

Next Step Student Highlights are a biweekly post that focuses on recipients of ISGC scholarships or internships. I contact the recipients and ask them questions about their goals, ISGC involvement and where they are currently in their career.
